Biography
Matilda Barkshire was born in Boone County, Kentucky and was the daughter of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman. She was enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, and possibly transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. Living in Rising Sun by 1836, Matilda was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. She was named as heir in Nancy Hawkins' will. Matilda eventually settled in Terre Haute, Indiana.
