Hawkins, Sandy
Enslaved to Joseph Hawkins, husband of Nancy Hawkins, Sandy was manumitted in Rising Sun, Indiana in 1838 by Nancy Hawkins. After manumission, Sandy moved to New Orleans. In 1851, he was arrested and charged with harboring a fugitive slave. In newspaper accounts, Sandy testified he thought the freedom seeker was a Free Man of Color.

Enslaved to Joseph Hawkins, husband of Nancy Hawkins, Catherine was manumitted in Rising Sun in 1838 by Nancy Hawkins. She was the first wife of UGRR agent Joseph Edrington, but Catherine disappeared from the historical record before 1850.

Barkshire, Woodford
Woodford was born in Boone County, Kentucky and was the son of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman. He was enslaved to the Barkshire family and transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins.
Woodford was in Rising Sun, Indiana by 1836, where he was officially manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. He was a known UGRR conductor who helped others to freedom as far away as Canada. Woodford Barkshire died in 1868, and is buried in Rising Sun, Indiana.

Samuel Barkshire was born enslaved in Harrison County, Kentucky in 1798. While he was held Boone County, Kentucky, he was enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, then transferred to his son, Felix Barkshire, then to Joseph Hawkins. Joseph Hawkins manumitted Samuel in 1833.

Minerva was the daughter of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman, and was born into slavery in Boone County, Kentucky. She was enslaved by Dickey Barkshire and possibly transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins.
Minerva was living in Rising Sun, Indiana by 1836 and was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. She was named as heir in Nancy Hawkins' will. Minerva eventually settled in Muscatine, Iowa.

She was enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, and possibly transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. Living in Rising Sun by 1836, Matilda was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. She was named as heir in Nancy Hawkins' will. Matilda eventually settled in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Living in Rising Sun, Indiana by 1836, Garrett was officially manumitted in 1848 by Nancy Hawkins. , A known UGRR conductor, he worked on riverboats and went south to New Orleans where he brought freedom seekers back to Indiana.

Frances was born in Augusta, Georgia about 1807. She was the wife of UGRR conductor, Samuel Barkshire. Enslaved in Boone County, Kentucky first by Dickey Barkshire, and then later by Joseph and Nancy Hawkins.

Emily was named as an heir in Nancy Hawkins' will. She eventually settled in Akron, Ohio.
