Biography

Born in Boone County, Kentucky, Garrett was the son of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman. He was first enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, before being transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. Living in Rising Sun, Indiana by 1836, Garrett was officially manumitted in 1848 by Nancy Hawkins. , A known UGRR conductor, he worked on riverboats and went south to New Orleans where he brought freedom seekers back to Indiana.
Garrett Barkshire was married twice, and died in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1894.
