Description

Originally founded by an act of Congress in 1789, the US Postal Service followed on the heels of several predecessors, including a British colonial postal system, a system founded by the Second Continental Congress, and a new postal system organized under the Articles of Confederation.
-
Postmasters were appointed for specific towns, also serving the surrounding regions. They were paid a small amount for this service, which was usually a secondary source of income.
