Biography

John Tomlinson was a private in the U.S. Revolutionary war, initially enlisted in Orange County (Va.). From April 1st, 1777, he served six months under Colonel Harrison. One year later he commenced serving 15 months with the Virginia Militia under Captain John Scott under General Nelson, Captain Benjamin Johnson, Captain Roe and then moved to Culpeper County (Va.) and enlisted to serve and fought in several skirmishes under Captain Joseph Wood and Captain E. Kirtley. He marched to Yorktown and fought against Cornwallis. He was granted a pension on January 7th, 1833 of $50.00 per year, at 73 years of age.

John Tomlinson held 9 enslaved persons in the 1820 Boone County (Ky.) census, 1 in the 1830 census, and 7 in the 1840 census. His will lists his son, William Tomlinson, and two granddaughters, Permelia Jarrell and Milly Jarrell.
