Biography
Leonard Stephens mentions Jerry in a letter to brother William: "Jerry took it into his head to go (enlist for the draft) so he went to Covington and they employed him the Government Stables there. He, after being there about ten days came home and I suppose, to stay, but only stayed one night, then went back." Jerry was apparently lifting sacks of grain and died on the spot. Stephens indicated that Jerry was not fit for service, potentially due to age. "Tom" went to Covington and had Jerry disinterred and brought his body back to the Stephens farm for burial. The letter was dated January 12, 1865.
