Jack Ryal was drafted into the U.S. Civil War. His military pension lists an alias of "Jacob Piatt." He settled in Oxford (Ohio).

Died at Oxford, Ohio, on Monday evening, April 4th, Jacob Piatt, in the 53rd year of his age. He was born in Boone Co., Kentucky, Dec. 14th, 1835, and remained a slave until the war. When liberated he enlisted in the U.S. army and served his country faithfully. Since the war he has made his home in Oxford. He was a quiet, faithful industrous man, winning friends wherever he was known. He was a member of Old John Brown Post No. 450 and was buried by his comrades, the commander, his brother-in-law being amongh the mourners. Services were held in the Christian Church of which he was a consistent member. Benjaman Ayers had command of the post who marched with the body of their deceased comrade to his last resting place.
