Rice is listed in the probate records for Obediah Flourence in Caswell County, NC. Obediah, James Florence's father, died in 1816, and it took some time for his estate to pass through probate, His valuation was $322, and he was assigned to James Florence as part of his inheritance.
Rice next appears in the will of Moses Simpson, James' brother-in-law. The will, dated 19 December 1918, assigned Rice a value of $200. The short time interval indicates that James transferred Rice to Moses almost as soon as Obediah's estate was settled.
