Biography
Born in 1767 in Winchester, Virginia to Phillip and Catherine Slough Bush, John Bush moved to Kentucky in 1788 and lived with the Marshall Family in what was Fayette County. While with the Marshall Family, John Craig fought in the Northwest Indian Wars of the 1790's and marched on Ft. Wayne in 1789 under William Henry Harrison. According to Sharon M. Campbell ('Ryle Relatives'), Bush married Sallie Craig in 1792 in Woodford County. Sallie Craig was the daughter of John Hawkins Craig. By 1794 Bush had relocated to what became Boone County and lived on the Ohio River in North Bend.
It is not known when Sallie Craig Bush died, but John Bush married Nancy Noble in 1814. During his time in Boone County, Bush operated a ferry that crossed the Ohio River from North Bend, Kentucky to North Bend, Ohio. In 1800, Bush received a tavern license to operate along with the ferry. His property was adjacent to Cave Johnson's and near John and Benjamin Craig. John Bush also was a justice of the peace over the years.
A newspaper article ("Sketch of the Life...") about John Bush's exploits was written in January of 1845, just eight months before his death. The article mentions that Bush did not receive a pension for his service under Harrison and was living in “reduced circumstances”. John Bush died in August 1845 and is buried in River View Cemetery in Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana.
