Mail Pouch Barn (South Fork, Boone County, Ky.)

Item

Title

Mail Pouch Barn (South Fork, Boone County, Ky.)

Description

This modest transverse-frame barn of the mid-20th century is built of young trees – many with the bark still in place – which were likely cut on the same property along South Fork Church Road near Verona. The broad side exhibits a faded advertisement for Mail Pouch Tobacco. Although common in other areas, these icons of rural America are rarely found in Boone County.
The interior of the barn conceals a surprise: a one-story, single-pen log cabin set on stone piers. The walls are secured by lapped-corner notching, and the chinking is intact. The doors, windows, and chimney have been removed.
