Biography
Moses was born enslaved in Boone County, but was manumitted at the direction of enslaver John Watts, per Watts' 1837 will. Moses, his brother, Henry, and their mother were to be manumitted in 1837. There has been no evidence yet found of their manumission, but both Moses and Henry were married in Jefferson County (Ind.) in the mid-1840s. The brothers bought land together in Ripley County in 1844 and settled there with their families.
