Biography
Tom Harris was among the large number of enslaved people to escape from Boone and Kenton Counties in April and May of 1847. He made his way to Elkhart County, Indiana where he worked for a local businessman named Samuel P. Judson. When his former slaveholder, Joseph Graves attempted to recapture him later that year, Judson came to his defense. While Graves was dealing with the charges Judson leveled against him, Harris was freed and left the region.
