Description: Abolitionist; Slave Holding; There are two sets of Gaines families in Boone County. One family was located northwest of Burlington in and around Gainesville/Idlewild. This family, originally from Culpeper County, Virginia, was comprised of George and Susannah Graves Gaines and their descendants.; Abner Gaines and his family settled in what became the Walton area and operated a tavern on the Lexington-Covington Pike. Reportedly, George Gaines and Abner Gaines were cousins.
