There are two sets of Gaines families in Boone County. One family was located northwest of Burlington in and around Gainesville/Idlewild. This family, originally from Culpeper County, Virginia, was comprised of George and Susannah Graves Gaines and their descendants.
Abner Gaines and his family settled in what became the Walton area and operated a tavern on the Lexington-Covington Pike. Reportedly, George Gaines and Abner Gaines were cousins.
