Biography

Roy Wilbur Wood was born to John and Goldie Wood on June 25, 1930, in Walton. He graduated from Florence High School in 1948 and enlisted in July of that year. He served in the Third Marine Battalion, where he became a Sergeant. Wood was killed by an explosive device on September 23, 1950 in South Korea, near Seoul. He was twenty years old.
Wood received the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. He is buried in Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. His headstone says, “Died in Korea serving his county.”
