According to his service records, Newton was wounded in the left hip in the battle at Chickamauga Creek, Georgia on September 19, 1863. He was sent home to Boone County to recuperate.
-
He returned to the same unit and was wounded again wounded in the left hip--this time severely--in a battle at Allatoona Heights, Georgia on May 27, 1864. He was sent to the hospital in Covington, Ky where he also fell ill and remained for several months.
-
While in the hospital, he wrote to General Thomas, requesting a leave of absence to visit his parents, as he was only fifteen miles away, and being on crutches, was currently unfit for duty. After being routed through several officers, his request was eventually granted. He was transferred to the reserve corps, until being mustered out on December 27, 1865.
