Biography
In June 1917, Samuel was living in Cleveland (Ohio) with his first wife and their four children. He was a laborer at the Standard Parts Co. His draft registration card describes him as being of medium height and build.
His 1923 marriage license gives Samuel's occupation as "boilermaker helper," and notes that he had been married once before. His bride, Iola, was a nurse born in Atlanta (Ga.) on July 12, 1898. Her parents were David M. Benson and Rena L. Keith. Reverend Cooper was to officiate the wedding ceremony.
In 1930 the family is living in Columbus (Ohio) where Samuel works as a laborer for the "railroad shops." His sister-in-law Julia Benson lives with them.
In 1940 the entire family, including Julia Benson, are in Columbus where Samuel is working as a boilermaker helper for the "steam railroad."
