- Enslaved to Joseph Hawkins, husband of Nancy Hawkins, Sandy was manumitted in Rising Sun, Indiana in 1838 by Nancy Hawkins. After manumission, Sandy moved to New Orleans. In 1851, he was arrested and charged with harboring a fugitive slave. In newspaper accounts, Sandy testified he thought the freedom seeker was a Free Man of Color.
