Biography
Frances was born in Augusta, Georgia about 1807. She was the wife of UGRR conductor, Samuel Barkshire. Enslaved in Boone County, Kentucky first by Dickey Barkshire, and then later by Joseph and Nancy Hawkins.
Living in Rising Sun, Indiana, she was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1838. (who freed her in Rising Sun in 1838). Frances, along with most of her family, was instrumental in UGRR activity in the Ohio Valley Region.
