Biography
Daughter of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman, Emily was born into slavery in Boone County, Kentucky. Emily was first enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, before being transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. Living in Rising Sun, Indiana by 1836, she was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. Emily was named as an heir in Nancy Hawkins' will. She eventually settled in Akron, Ohio.
