Description: Adam and Sarah Crosswhite and four children escaped from Carroll County slaveholder Francis Giltner. In 1847, Giltner and Francis Troutman went to Marshall, MI, where the Crosswhites were living, to recapture them. This was considered a part of the 1847 “Kentucky Raids.” The Crosswhites were able to escape to Canada, and Giltner took up the matter in the courts.
