Description

Named for the Milwaukee River, the vessel supported Major-General Canby's offensive against Mobile (Ala.). The vessel was sunk by a torpedo during the campaign.

The first Milwaukee, a double-turreted monitor, was laid down on 27 May 1862 at Carondelet [St. Louis], Mo., by James B. Eads; launched on 4 February 1864; completed on 2 August 1864; and commissioned at Mound City, Ill., on 27 August 1864, Acting Volunteer Lt. James W. Magune in command.

Milwaukee’s hulk, raised in 1868, was towed to St. Louis where her material was used in the construction of the bridge across the Mississippi which bears the name of James B. Eads, her builder. --From Naval History and Heritage Command website, U.S. Navy
