1848--Freedom for Woodford Barkshire
Son of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Harriet Newman. He was born in 1832 into slavery in Boone County (Ky.) and was owned by the Barkshire family before being transferred to the holding of Joseph and Nancy Hawkins in Rising Sun by 1836. He was manumitted in 1848. As an official free person of color, he was a conductor for the UGRR and helped freedom seekers find a path to Canada. He died in 1868.

Sandy Hawkins is a man who was manumitted in Rising Sun in 1838 by Nancy Hawkins. Sandy moved to New Orleans and was arrested and charged with harboring a fugitive slave in 1851.

She was held by the slaveholder Dickey Barkshire and was possibly transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. She was in Rising Sun by 1836, and was manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. She was named as heir in Nancy Hawkins' will and ultimately settled in Akron, Ohio.

In Rising Sun by 1836, manumitted by Nancy Hawkins in 1848. She was named as heir in Nancy Hawkins' will and ultimately settled in Muscatine, Iowa.

The son of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Newman, he was an Underground Railroad conductor, he worked on riverboats which traveled south to New Orleans and brought freedom seekers back. He was born in Boone County, enslaved by the Barkshire family and was possibly transferred to Joseph and Nancy Hawkins. In Rising Sun by 1836, he was officially manumitted in 1848. He was married twice and died in Terre Haute, IN in 1894.

Born in Georgia, she is the wife of Samuel Barkshire. She was initially enslaved by Dickey Barkshire, and later by Joseph and Nancy Hawkins (who freed her in Rising Sun in 1838). She was instrumental in UGRR activity.

On October 11,1824, Joseph Henderson of Decatur County, Indiana, manumitted Stephen, a man of color. First deed of emancipation filed in the county of record for both (Decatur, IN,) second filing was in Boone County, KY on October 12,1825.
