Rouse, Elias S.
Elias was born in Kentucky. He enlisted in the 54th Masachusetts infantry, Company K, in 1863 at Readville (Mass.). He had escaped to Massachusetts prior to enlistment, and listed his place of birth as Malden (Conn.). Records give a variety of information, possibly to protect him from being identified as a freedom seeker. He was wounded in South Carolina, but continued to serve until the end of the war. Afterwards he settled in Ypsilanti (Mich.), and married Mary Gay, widow of another soldier who was lost in the war.

During the Civil War he served as a hospital attendant in Bowling Green (Ky.) He was drafted, and discharged when his term of service expired.

Aaron Rankin was born in Kentucky, and is shown to have lived in Cincinnati. He served in the U.S. Navy as an "Ordinary Seaman." He may possibly have a connection to other Rankin soldiers born in Boone County (Ky.).

NOTE: Enlisted in the 117th, Co. at Lexington, 1864. Mustered out at Brownsville, TX; 10 Aug 1867. Service record states birthplace as Bourbon Co (residence at time of enlistment) Volunteer enlistment record lists Boone Co. as birthplace. Slaveholder filed compensation claim in 1866, stated he was owner from "prior to beginning of the late rebellion up to the time of enlistment" no mention of previous slaveholder. William B. Murphy of Walton had a male slave, age 9 (b. ca. 1841) on the 1850 U. S. Federal Census Slave Schedule in Boone County. Daniel's widow Sallie Murphy took pension in KY 18 Jan 1909

Asa Newton appears in the 1850 District 1, Boone, Kentucky census. He is a physician. In 1860 Asa is living in Pendleton, Kentucky. The 1870 census shows Asa Newton living in Bigger, Jennings, Indiana. He has again moved in the 1880 census to Grandview, Edgar, Illinois.
