Mattoon (Ill.) Kentucky immigrants were the first white settlers in the area, arriving in 1826. In 1861 the town was named for William B. Mattoon, a railroad chief construction engineer.

Chicago (Ill.) First settled around 1780, the town of Chicago was incorporated 12 Aug 1833. The name was derived from the French rendering of an indigenous Miami-Illinois word for a wild plant similar to an onion that grew in the area.
