Biography
-
In Jeremiah Kirtley's will, 30 December 1806, Nanny was among the enslaved people left to wife Mary Kirtley. Nanny also appeared by name in the inventory, but was given a low appraisal amount , indicating she was of advanced age or beyond her prime at the time. Nanny was not among the people enslaved by Mary Kirtley who were sold in 1817, but was later living with Robert Kirtley, the youngest living son of Jeremiah and Mary Kirtley. She died sometime after 1824.
-
She had been brought to Kentucky in 1795, after the death of Jeremiah's father, William, who had originally enslaved Nanny. She had at least two children, Ben Oliver and Milly, from whom she had been separated upon the move to Kentucky.
