According to family lore, William Scott was coming back to Boone County, Kentucky with his wife, Lucy Stephens Scott, and their six children with the help of Elijah Ryle and his nephew Davy Ryle, when all three men caught cholera and died in the same night. The widow and her children had to write to Kentucky for help.
