Biography
Violet was born in Virginia to unknown parents and was enslaved to Joseph Hawkins, husband of Nancy Hawkins, in Boone County, Kentucky. She was manumitted prior to 1830 and lived in Rising Sun, Indiana with or near Nancy Hawkins. Additionally, Violet was named in Nancy's will.
She was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church (Belleview Baptist) along with Nancy Hawkins, and was baptized the same day. She was received at Middle Creek in 1818, where Joseph Hawkins was listed as her slave holder.
In 1850, she was living in Rising Sun, Indiana as Violet Louis in the home of E.H. Wright, where she was a servant. Her will was probated in an Ohio County, Indiana court on September 1, 1853.
