Biography
Nancy came to Kentucky from Fauquier County, Virginia with her first husband, Reuben George. Reuben died in 1814 in Bourbon County. Nancy soon married Joseph Hawkins, Jr. several months after Reuben's death. Hawkins brought Nancy to Boone County, along with several enslaved people. It was her first husband's wish that all of those he enslaved be manumitted .
After Joseph died in 1836, Nancy moved to Rising Sun(Ind.) where she manumitted all of the people she had enslaved that were not already Free.
A letter, published in the Brooklyn Eagle in 1887 revealed that Nancy was assisting Samuel Barkshire, whom her second husband had manumitted before his death, in his Underground Railroad activities.
