Description
America Clark paid $75 for keeping a “negro woman and infant child”. Each year, people are reimbursed by the court for taking care of paupers, burying drowned people, etc. Some of those that are taken care of at the county's expense are African Americans and those who took care of them for the year are then reimbursed with tax money – but one can assume that these “paupers” are likely working for the families with whom they are staying, e.g.
