Gustavus was the son of Joseph Edrington and Catherine Hawkins, he was born Free in Rising Sun. He appeared in the Indiana Negro Register in 1854, along with his sister, Harriet. He may have been living with the Barkshire family for a time, though he did not appear in the census records.

Sometime before 1863, Gustavus moved to Akron, where he lived with his cousin, Emily Barkshire Martin. He trained as a barber and likely worked for Emily's husband. He enlisted for service in the Fifth Infantry, Co. F. United States Colored Troops and attained the rank of First Sergeant.

According to his service records, Gustavus was badly wounded at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm and New Market Heights on Sep 29, 1864. He sustained a fracture of the femur from a gunshot that caused bone loss and severe disability. He was hospitalized for a year before asking for a disability discharge. He was discharged 15 Dec 1865. He applied for a pension in March, 1866 but passed away only two months later.
