Biography
Harriet was enumerated in the 1850 census, in the household of Samuel Barkshire. Samuel's family was close with her father, Joseph Edrington.
She was again documented in the "negro register" required by the county, as part of the Black Codes of Indiana. Within this document details include: her full name, age, physical description, place of birth and residence. The witness attesting to the veracity of the information was Samuel Barkshire.
Harriet's mother was likely Catherine Hawkins, who married Joseph Edrington in 1837. Joseph was remarried to Mary Ross in 1846, a year after Harriet's birth year, if correct. It's unclear why Harriet was listed in the Barkshire household in 1850, as her father and step-mother were still in Rising Sun. In 1860, she was still living with Barkshire family and her parents were not enumerated in Rising Sun. Census records show us that it wasn't unusual for Samuel Barkshire to have several non-family members in his household.
Harriet was only 18 when she died in 1863, according to Sextons records, though the cause of her death is unknown.
