In the spring of 1803, John Hurst of Scott County brought suit against Thomas Mahan, of Bourbon County, before the Bourbon County Circuit Court. The complaint followed a series of transfers of ownership of the girl, Suckey, among several parties over about three years' time. The Jury found for the Hurst, the plaintiff. The defendant, Thomas Mahan, was required to either surrender the girl to Hurst or pay him a sum of 80 pounds sterling.
