Biography
A man named John Barnwell, "22 yrs. old, 5'10", slender built, very straight and erect in his carriage" was committed to the Henderson jail on 28 April, 1838. Barnwell claimed to be free-born, raised in Boston and that his father's name was Osman Barnwell. The ad depicted him as a "first-rate cook and house servant" likely to have worked on a steamboat or "raised in a house." He was being hired out by the jailor and if no one were to claim him, he would have been auctioned. The jailor claimed to have contacted someone in Boston to verify John's status and wasn't able to confirm.
