Biography
Patsy was probably born in enslavement, and likely in Boone County (Ky.) Any surname she may have had before marrying Frank Scales is unknown.
At some point, Patsy married Frank Scales, with whom she had several children. Though the 1880 census shows them as married, they lived on two separate properties. Frank was a farm laborer near Big Bone, while Patsy lived near Walton with her young daughters, all of whom are listed in the household of Samuel Hind, where Patsy was a domestic servant. The couple separated soon after.
Patsy is known to have had both economic struggles and poor health.
