Any surname she may have had before marrying Frank Scales is unknown.; At some point, Patsy married Frank Scales, with whom she had several children. Though the 1880 census shows them as married, they lived on two separate properties. Frank was a farm laborer near Big Bone, while Patsy lived near Walton with her young daughters, all of whom are listed in the household of Samuel Hind, where Patsy was a domestic servant. The couple separated soon after.; Patsy is known to have had both economic struggles and poor health.
