Description
-
Maria, a 24-yr-old woman held by Richard Beall of Washington Co., was sentenced in 1830 to be hanged for the stabbing death of an overseer named Edward McClane or McClain while he was administering a whipping on her. Maria escaped from jail, but was recaptured. Gov. Metcalf intervened on her behalf and her sentence was pardoned. She was, however, returned to enslavement.
