Biography
-
Daniel Goff was born in Cumberland County, Virginia to Samuel and Diana Goff, free people of African descent.
-
In September of 1777 Goff joined the fight for Independence, enlisting for three years. During his time in service he survived the brutal encampment at Valley Forge and fought in the pivotal Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey. Records show that he served under the command of Generals Washington and Lafayette.
-
In 1780 he was discharged from service in Chesterfield, Virginia and came to Kentucky in the late 1780's with Major David Leitch, who presumably hired him as a laborer.
-
Sometime in the 1820s he moved to Boone County and lived on the homestead (now on Gunpowder Road) of Alexander Marshall.
-
James Taylor urged Goff to apply for his pension and supported this effort with an affidavit that included; attempts in the past to obtain compensation for Goff and other affidavits from men who had served with him. The pension also gives insight into the relationship between Goff and James Taylor. In 1834 Goff filed for his pension with the Clerk of Courts in Boone County, Kentucky. He received his last quarterly pension payment in March of 1843.
