Originally enlisting in 1861, it appears he was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri on Aug 10, 1861. William earned a bounty of $39 for re-enlisting the following year.
He was wounded at the Battle of Little Sugar Creek (Dunagin's Farm), near Elkhorn, Arkansas, on March 7, 1862. He "was sorely wounded through right breast disabling him permanently." Afterwards, he was put on light duty. After the war, he bacame a doctor.
