Description
Cricket, a stern-wheel steamer, was built at Pittsburgh, Pa.; purchased 18 November 1862 at Cairo, III., and commissioned 19 January 1863, Acting Master A. R. Langhorne in command. --From Naval History and Heritage Command website, U.S. Navy
The ship was named for the insect. During the Civil War, the vessel patrolled the Mississippi River and its tributaries, frequently coming under fire, and once repelling boarders in an attempt to capture the ship. She was decommissioned 30 June 1865 and sold 17 August 1865 at Mound City, Ill.
