A member of the prominent Gaines family, Abner Gaines (b. 1766) purchased property in southern Boone County from Archibald Reid in circa 1813. Gaines continued to operate a tavern and inn, building a striking new house in circa 1814, which is preserved today as the Gaines Tavern History Center.
In 1830 Absalom Gaines was known to have three enslaved. In 1840 Absalom Gaines was known to have eight enslaved. The 1850 census shows Absalom Gaines living in District 2, Boone, Kentucky with his wife and children. His occupation is listed as farmer. The 1860 census shows Absalom living in Burlington, Boone, Kentucky. He stated he was born in Kentucky.
In 1850, Alonzo Gaines lived in District 2, Boone, Kentucky with wife Mary Christy and a daughter. His occupation was farmer. Alonzo was in Florence, Boone, Kentucky in 1870. The 1880 census shows Alonzo in Taylorsport, Boone, Kentucky with wife Mary. He stated both his parents were from Virginia. Alonzo died January 26, 1886 in Boone County, Kentucky and is buried in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Benjamin Rice Gaines (1821-1910) was the son of Richard and Judith Rice Gaines and grandson of early Boone County settler, George Gaines. Ben Gaines was married at least three times, but had only one child, W.A. Gaines. His known wives were: Eliza Jane Graves (1832-1873); Emily McDannold Gaines (1822-1890); and Nannie E. Berkshire (1849-1936). His widow Nannie, spent many years in Petersburg living in the house built for her sister, Antonia Berkshire Parker.
Edwin Gaines was born 16 Jan 1821 in Kentucky. The 1850 census shows Edwin Gaines living in District 1, Boone, Kentucky with his wife, Ann and three children. The 1860 and 1870 census for Petersburg, Boone, Kentucky shows Edwin still living with his family. His occupation is listed as farmer. In 1880 Edwin is again living in Petersburg, Boone, Kentucky. He stated both of his parents were born in Virginia. By 1900 Edwin is listed as widowed in the census records. He was living in Bullittsville, Boone, Kentucky with his son, Charles. Edwin died April 3, 1904 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
Elvira Gaines was born September 10, 1841 to parents James Gaines and Elvira Tousey. On 21 Jun 1859 she married Joseph Chambers in Boone County, Kentucky. The 1850 census shows Elivra living with her parents in District 2, Boone, Kentucky. In 1860, Elivra is shown in the census with her husband Joseph Chambers and a son living in Taylor Port, Boone, Kentucky. By 1870 she and her husband and children are living in Covington Ward 3, Kenton, Kentucky. Her occupation is keeping house. Again in 1880 she is living in Covington, Kenton, Kentucky with her husband Joseph. Elivra died October 15, 1885 and is buried in Highland Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky.
In 1850 Gabriel Gaines was in District 2, Boone, Kentucky with his wife Nancy. He stated he was born about 1807 in Virginia and was a farmer. The 1860 census shows he and wife Nancy living in Verona, Boone, Kentucky. By 1870, Gabriel Gaines was living in Petersburg, Boone, Kentucky. His wife Nancy had died that same year. Gabriel Gaines died July 10, 1880 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
George Gaines was known to have five enslaved in the 1810 Boone County, Kentucky census. George Gaines was known to have eleven enslaved in the 1820 Burlington, Boone County, Kentucky census. George Gaines was known to have twleve enslaved in the 1830 Boone, Kentucky census.
In 1850 George T Gaines was living in District 2, Boone, Kentucky with his parents James Gaines and Elvira Tousey. His occupation was listed as farmer. Nov 30, 1858 he married Susan Harrison in Boone County. In 1860 George is living with his wife, mother and a sibling in Walton, Boone, Kentucky. The 1870 and 1880 census records show George Gaines in Walton, Boone, Kentucky with his wife and family. Geroge Tousey Gaines died in 1923 and is buried in the Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery.
James Gaines was known to have three enslaved in the 1820 Burlington, Boone, Kentucky census. In 1840 James Gaines was known to have eleven enslaved. The 1850 census shows James Gaines living in District 2, Boone, Kentucky with wife, Virginia and their children. James is living in Taylor Port, Boone, Kentucky in 1860 and listed as a farmer. James died February 24, 1868 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
James Gaines was born December 21, 1793 in Virginia to Abner Gaines and Susan Matthews. James M. Gaines, became the first postmaster for the community referred to as Gaines Cross Roads, now Walton, in 1815.
In 1850 and 1860 John G Gaines is listed in Petersburg, Ky. He was married to Mary J xx. George and Elizabeth Riddell are living with John Gaines and his wife. In 1870 only Mary is in the household with John. Nov 5, 1878 John G Gaines marries Jane Ellis in Kenton County, Ky. There residence is listed as Boone County. John and his second wife Jane are listed together in the 1900 census. Both are buried in Petersburg Cemetery.
Born to Elizabeth and Abner Gaines in 1795, John P. Gaines moved with his family from Augusta County, Virginia to Boone County, Kentucky shortly thereafter. (Hanger, page 5)
Joseph Adison Gaines was born in Kentucky. In 1848 He married Martha Lyne in Woodford County, Ky. In the 1850 census he is with his wife Martha in Boone County. In 1860 and 1870 census he is in Burlington Boone County, Ky. Joseph is next seen with Martha in the 1900 census, again in Burlington. Joseph died 9 Jun 1903 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery. Martha died 30 Aug 1904 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
Appears in 1850 census with parents, Absalom and Frances. In 1860, 1870, 1880 Legrand is shown living with wife and children in Burlington. In the 1900 census Legrand and Elizabeth Ann are still in Burlington but no children are listed. In 1910 Legrand and Elizabeth still reside in Burlington, son Robert and his family are living with them. The 1920 census Legrand is living with his son James. Legrand Gaines died December 7, 1922 and is buried in Bullittsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
Richard Gaines was born 29 Oct 1789 in Virginia. He was living in District 2, Boone, Kentucky in the 1850 census. The 1860 census shows Ricahrd and wife Catharine living in Burlington, Boone, Kentucky. He is listed as a farmer. Richard died February 14, 1870 and is buried in the Gaines-Graves Cemetery in Boone County, Kentucky.
