In 1836 George Berry emancipates Rebecca Hughes. In 1839 he submits a legal deed that her son (George Thomas Hughes), born after her own emancipation, is legally recognized as free. Rebecca is known to have been married to a man named Thomas Hughes. It is possible that the family of three remained with George Berry for a period. They remain in Boone County for at least a decade later.
