- Son of Samuel Barkshire and Frances Harriet Newman. He was born in 1825 into slavery in Boone County (Ky.) and was owned by the Barkshire family before being transferred to the holding of Joseph and Nancy Hawkins in Rising Sun by 1836. He was manumitted in 1848. As an official free person of color, he was a conductor for the UGRR and helped freedom seekers find a path to Canada. He served in the Civil war and died in 1864.
